National Family Law Pathways

Family Law Pathways Network

The Toowoomba and South West Queensland Family Law Pathway Network was established in 2010. It is auspiced by Lifeline Darling Downs and South West Qld Ltd which employs a Project Officer two days per week.

The network is supported by a local Steering Committee comprised of practitioners from the legal, financial and social science sectors. Representatives are also drawn from government, the private sector and the community sector.

The network is committed to the long term vision of a connected family law system which minimises conflict and emphasises the best interest of the child in separation and divorce proceedings. We do this by:

Services Include:
  • Promoting awareness of post-separation services to parents
  • Promoting and supporting the uptake of Collaborative Practice as a viable alternative to litigation
  • Supporting local Collaborative Practitioners via a bi-monthly Practice Group
  • Sourcing and delivering quality training to enhance the skills of professionals working in the family law arena.

Our challenges for the coming year include the design and rollout of a community education program targeted at separating parents.

Our local network is keen to support culturally competent models of service delivery to clients who are First Australians or from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Historically, Toowoomba has been an identified regional centre for the resettlement of former refugees and asylum seekers and we have significant numbers of residents from African states, the Middle East and South East Asia.

We are also continuing to test and refine a model of community-based collaborative practice which entails an initial risk and family assessment. This process aims to support parents to become ready, willing and able to enter into the collaborative process of separation and divorce. The project is mentored by Marilyn Scott from UTS. Marilyn is widely recognised as one of the first trained collaborative practitioners in Australia.
